Celebrating the special abilities

While the world observed International Day for Persons with Disability (World Disability Day) on 3rd Dec ’15, in India it was more of a week-long celebrations, with lot of activities, awareness campaigns and programsDifferently-Abled children celebrating a week full of activities for Special Children designed and dedicated to acknowledge the abilities these special people have and the kind of resources required for promoting accessibility for making their life easy. Children from our special unit also had the privilege to be a part of numerous activities spread throughout the week. Here are a few snippets:

  1. International Film Festival (Dec 1 to 3): 28 students and 8 members of the staff attended the First ever International film festival organized by Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment in collaboration with National Film Development Corporation (NFDC), Accessible India Campaign (ALIMCO), HAANS Foundation and Amar Jyoti Charitable Trust at Siri Fort Auditorium, New Delhi. Representatives and children from a number of NGOs participated in the event. The function started with a welcome speech and lighting of the lamp by the honorable chief guests comprising of Mr. Awanish .K. Awasthi, Mr. Vijay Sanpala, Mr. Thavrchand Gehlot, Mr. Krishan Pal Gujjar, Mr. Lov Verma, Mr. Gulzar (celebrity from Bollywood) and Ms. Sanjana Kapoor. Thereafter, the students watched different stage performances. The students and staff came back after having a sumptuous lunch. The next day, students watched “Chotoder Chobi”, a Bengali movie showcasing an emotional and enlightening insight into the world of midgets followed by “closer” and “Eyesight without eyes”. 
  2. World Disability day: A sports event was organized on 3rd December 2015 at Sanjay Colony to Differently abled children participating in race.mark the International day of Persons with Disability. Students participated in different activities like “Soft Ball throw”, Soft Ball Throw”, “50 meters Run” , “Target Hit” and “50 meters Hop Jump. The winners were given prizes and colour kits were distributed amongst all students as a token of their participation.
  3. Sports Event at Okhla Centre: 10 students from the special unit participated in the sports event organized at “Okhla Centre” on 4th December. They participated in various sports like “Badminton”, “50 meters Run”, “Balloon Bursting”, “Softy Balance Walk”, “Joining the ring”, “Obstacle Race”, and “Relay Race”. Aakash stood first in “Joining the ring” and 3rd in “50 meters run” while Jyoti Thakur and Rohit were adjudged third in “obstacle race” and “softy balance walk” respectively. The students enjoyed the day and were given refreshment towards the end of the event.
  4. Sports Event at Bharti College: 25 students along with 7 staff members participated in a sports event organized by Aashirwad Special Education School, a unit of Sanjeewani welfare society at Bharti College, Janakpuri on 5th December 2015. More than 1000 students from 40 special schools participated in the event. Mahashay Dharampal Singh, Founder and CEO of MDH Masala, was the Chief Guest. The event started with a welcome speech and lighting of the lampDifferently Abled children participating in activities organised for them. followed by a student’s march.  A number of sports activities were conducted including “25 meters walk”, “Soft Ball Throw”, “Short-put Throw”, “50 meters Run”, “100 meters Run” and “Bocce”.  17 students from our special unit won prizes and rest of them were given participation certificates as well. The members of staff were given different positions in the ground to assist the students. Rohit & khushboo, Jatin, Rani  & Kunal grabbed 1st, 2ndand 3rd positions in 25 meters walk respectively. Vishnu stood 2nd in soft ball throw while there were three prizes in 100 meters Run grabbed by Rakesh, Pooja Kumari and Kamini. The 50 meters run was won by Aakash and Uttam. Geeta, Jyoti Thakur, Jyoti and Radha Mani grabbed 1st position in Bocce. Mohit and Mukesh stood 2nd and 3rd in Short put throw. It all showed the innumerable opportunities that are available for the differently abled. The need is to motivate them, acknowledge their capabilities and make people aware about how special they are.
