Project STEADY - an Oasis in Greater Noida
At a time when rape cases are on the rise in Delhi NCR region, Project STEADY initiated by Asian Paints Limited under their CSR activities and implemented by Deepalaya, a Delhi-based NGO at Kasna seeks to empower girls to put up a fight during untoward circumstances.
It is the second year of Project STEADY. Deepalaya and Asian Paints have reached out to 2276 girls studying in schools located in Dankour block of Greater Noida during financial year 2005-16. The students were given three sessions of self-defense training. And around 505 students (TOT) were also trained to train other students in their schools in the absence of Deepalaya and Asian Paints Limited.
Apart from self-defense training, 2122 students were given career counseling sessions so that they are aware about the innumerable opportunities they have as soon as they pass out from Class 10 and what subjects should they choose based on their area of interest. Around 30 meritorious students from economically weaker sections were given scholarships to meet their education expenses during financial year 2016-17. The students were selected based on a scholarship test conducted in the schools where career counseling and self-defense training were conducted.
After a year of toiling on the field, it was time to celebrate the success of the project. A small ceremony was organized at Savitri Bai Phule Inter College, Kasna in the presence of representatives from Asian Paints Limited, Deepalaya and 17 schools in Dankour block.
The programme started with lighting of the lamp alongwith Saraswathi Vandana by students of Savitri Bai Phule Inter College. He appreciated the efforts made by Asian Paints and Deepalaya for conducting career counseling sessions as there is a sea change in the job market, even if one goes 10 years down the lane. He said journalism could be a career option. He also said Mahatma Gandhi was a journalist as he wrote a lot in his life.
Thereafter, students put up a skit showing the self-defense skills they have learnt. Everyone was flabbergasted by the way students of Savitri Bai Phule and Kisan Inter College presented the techniques they have learnt during self-defense training. Mr. Pawan Kumar Mohta, Sr. Manager, Q&A appreciated the efforts made by Deepalaya in educating the girls coming from a rural background, where they are still asked to sit indoors, when it comes to educating them.
This was followed by certificate distribution for students, who participated in self-defense training during the year. The students who were given training to train their peers in the school were given medals to motivate them.
