T.K Mathew our Secretary and Chief Executive wrote: We are part of Credibility Alliance and associated with eight network connections which are made up of large number of NGOs. We will propagate/motivate our entire partner NGOs in the network to take forward the Global Compact Principles and to engage in collaborative partnership which helps to advance the broader development goals of the United Nations, particularly the Millennium Development Goalsâ€Â

The Ten Principles of Global Compact The Global Compact ten principles in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption enjoy universal consensus and are derived from
• The Universal Declaration of Human Rights
• The International Labour Organization’s Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Right at work
• The Rio Declaration on Environment and Development
• The United Nations Convention against corruption.

The ten principles are:

Human Rights
Principle 1: Business should support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights;
Principle 2: Make sure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses.

Labour Standards
Principle3: Business should uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining
Principle 4: The elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labour
Principle 5: The effective abolition of child labour
Principle 6: The elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation

Principle 7: Business should support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges
Principle 8: Undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility and
Principle 9: Encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies

Anti corruption
Principle10: Businesses should work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery.
The Global Compact was the initiative of Mr. Kofi Anan, the erstwhile Secretary General of the UN to use the power of collective action to promote responsible corporate citizenship amongst corporates to curb the emerging negative impacts of globalization. The advantages of globalization, though many, have spread unequally within and amongst the countries. Social areas like human rights, labour standards, anti corruption and environment received little care although ambitious policies were adopted to spread the benefits of globalization. So there was a need by corporates, to voluntarily support this initiative to counter the emerging trend.
Deepalaya is a part of the wide international consensus that today’s global problems are too complex for any one sector to solve alone. So a collective action is required.
