Deepalaya Special Unit, Gandhi Basti
The Foundation: Caring for children with special abilities became a part of Deepalaya 15 years ago, when Disability was included as a programme. The first breakthrough was setting up of Centre for Special Children at Deepalaya School, Sanjay Colony. In 2008, the Centre shifted to Gandhi Basti and has been making life better for many children since then.

The programme aims to be that platform from where the special children could jumpstart their journey and be mainstreamed into regular education.

The Infrastructure: Small, simple and sufficient!
Deepalaya Special Unit is a colorful campus in Okhla Mandi with bright classrooms equipped with learning aids, a fun station and a central courtyard to play around. Human Infrastructure at the Unit involves Programme Coordinator, Special Educators and Instructors among other staff.
The facilities Classes and more
The classes are held in two batches. Basic counting, alphabets, singing, dancing, painting, storytelling and skating are some of the activities conducted during the batches. Speech Therapy is offered to the hearing impaired. In addition, every student at the center benefits from Occupational Therapy.
Other facilities include provision of Certificate of Disability, railway concession, aids and appliances and so on.

Trivia
1. Like Deepalaya Schools, the Unit also positively discriminates towards the Girl Child, and maintains the 50:50 boys to girls ratio.
2. PTA Meetings are a regular feature at the Unit. Held at 5 different locations, they help spread awareness, gather feedback and make the right impact on communities around
3. The Unit has some special instructors like Murugesh, who are differently-abled and help out special children.
4. The day at the Unit starts with prayers to the Lord, followed by Yoga sessions. This, the Unit believes is essential to keep the children fit and healthy. The colorful fun station at the Centre also makes learning a joyful experience.
5. Brijesh and Reena, two of the special children from the Unit qualified for the Special Olympics of the World Winter Games held in USA this year. Brijesh came back with a Silver in Snowboarding and Reena returned with a Bronze in Alpine Skiing. 2 of the 5 medals bagged by India were Deepalaya’s.
